Directory of Early Photographers in Northamptonshire, Sources and Conventions
Coverage: Though now a part of Cambridgeshire, Peterborough was historically a part of Northamptonshire and is included in this studio directory. Occasionally an out-of-county location was named as part of the address in a Northamptonshire directory, usually because it was the nearest sizeable town. Such entries still belong to Northamptonshire and are not excluded from this listing. Abbreviations: The following abbreviations are used for Northamptonshire sources: Evidence has been drawn from: CAP 1896, 1901, 1907, 1912 Abbreviations, as indicated, are also used for the following additional sources of information: Adamson (1): More Early Studios, K Adamson (The Photographic Journal, Royal Photographic Society, January 1988) Adamson (2): Professional Photographers in Lincolnshire, K I P Adamson (PhotoHistorian Supplement 99, Royal Photographic Society, 1993) Bradley: Alfred Seaman, Victorian Derbyshire Photographer, Dr John Bradley, published online Heathcote: A Faithful Likeness – the first Photographic Studios in the British Isles, 1841 to 1855, Bernard & Pauline Heathcote (Heathcote, 2002)
Individuals are listed before any non-family partnerships that include them. Partnerships appear under the names of both (or all) partners. If a photographer embarked on more than one partnership, those partnerships are listed in alphabetical order of the partner who is not the focus of the entry. Addresses are listed in order of their earliest appearance. Imprecise addresses (those which name only the town/village, or those which give a street but no number) are recorded separately. They may, of course, refer to a studio listed more precisely elsewhere in that photographer’s entry. Additional notes are set in italics. Kingscliffe is sometimes printed as one word and sometimes as two in trade directories. The single-word version has been used here. www.earlyphotostudios.uk is a non-commercial web site for local and family historians, listing photographers operating 1840-1916, in Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Leicestershire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Rutland and Suffolk. The original site was researched and written in 2011 by the late Robert Pols, photo historian and author, and this re-constructed site is dedicated to his memory.
